New Windows: They Saved My Bank Account

I have to admit that I am very frugal, but I have to be with my large family. When heating and air-conditioning bills were just becoming too much to bear, I finally caved in and bought new windows that I was told were more energy-efficient. They weren't as expensive as I thought they would be, which was great news. I had them installed just before winter began, and I received the lowest heating bill for the month of November that I had received in years! I was so happy that I had those windows installed, especially after being so hesitant to spend the cash on them. I created this blog to help other frugal people like me realize that sometimes spending money on home improvements really does pay off in the long run! I am now looking into new home insulation to save even more cash!

How To Clean And Care For Your Window Blinds

by Michelle Davidson

Blinds are a nice type of window covering that allows you to let in light and enjoy the outdoor view and make adjustments to filter the light as needed throughout the daytime hours. To help clean and care for your window blinds, there are a number of things you should be doing. Caring for them properly will ensure they last longer. Read on for a few care tips for your blinds.

Dust Them Often

Dust your blinds down often with a damp microfiber cloth, vacuum extension hose, or a duster to remove daily dust and dander from your blinds. This buildup can make your blinds heavy if not cleaned off of them. When you open and close your blinds, it can be too heavy and cause the strings that hold it together to breakdown. The dust can also dry out your strings as well. Dust your blinds at least once per week.

Deep Clean Them

Deep clean your blinds by removing them from your window and placing them in a washtub or bathtub filled with a mixture of bleach and water. Allow the blinds to soak, then rinse them clean to remove all of the soap on them. Once they're clean, hang them outside or in a garage to dry completely. Be sure they are fully extended and open to help them dry thoroughly. Once dry, hang them back up in your home. Do this for all of the blinds in your home to get them clean. You should clean your blinds like this at least once per year.

Be Gentle With Them

Blinds are fairly strong, but they aren't meant to hold a lot of weight. Don't pull on the cord too hard to open the blinds, and don't overturn the opener rod, as both can cause your blinds to break. Also, be sure not to tug on the blind panels too roughly, as they can easily break. You need to be gentle with your blinds to lengthen the life of them.

Window blinds are a budget-friendly way to cover your windows, although you may not want to replace these blinds too often. Taking good care of your blinds can help ensure your blinds last longer.
