New Windows: They Saved My Bank Account

I have to admit that I am very frugal, but I have to be with my large family. When heating and air-conditioning bills were just becoming too much to bear, I finally caved in and bought new windows that I was told were more energy-efficient. They weren't as expensive as I thought they would be, which was great news. I had them installed just before winter began, and I received the lowest heating bill for the month of November that I had received in years! I was so happy that I had those windows installed, especially after being so hesitant to spend the cash on them. I created this blog to help other frugal people like me realize that sometimes spending money on home improvements really does pay off in the long run! I am now looking into new home insulation to save even more cash!

Helpful Information To Install And Manage Your Lawn Sprinkler System

by Michelle Davidson

Lawn sprinklers make it easy to get and keep a healthy and attractive lawn on your property. But to install your own sprinkler system, there are a few details you need to educate yourself on and use. Here are some recommendations to help you install an efficient sprinkler system and keep your lawn healthy without water waste.

Measure Your Property Water Pressure

When you are planning a lawn sprinkler system, you will evaluate the size of your yard and any obstacles you need to irrigate around so you will have a good idea of where you want sprinkler heads to spray from. But before you can begin installing the heads in those areas, you should understand how much water pressure you have to work with. The amount of water pressure you have access to depends on the water system in your neighborhood, how much water pressure there is, and how many neighbors you have pulling from the system. If, for example, you live in a subdivision that has a lot of other water users, your water pressure may be lower. However, if you are in a more rural area with few neighbors, your water pressure may be high.

To find out how much water pressure you have, use a water pressure gauge on your outdoor faucet to measure the pressure, or you can calculate it by how fast it fills a five-gallon bucket. The lower the water pressure, the more zones you will need to install with fewer heads on each zone. Then, look at the type of sprinkler heads you choose. Some heads are low-flow heads and will spray out less water so you can put more on a single zone, but they will need to run for a longer period of time to get enough water delivered to your lawn.

Install a Smart Programmable System

To help you get the most from your lawn sprinklers, you will need to look into a programmable controller for the zones. This will help you set your system sprinklers to run when it is most efficient for the outdoor conditions, such as early in the morning, and to keep your lawn healthy even if you are not at home. A good sprinkler program is one in which you can manage from your smartphone so you can delay watering, for example after you have a heavy rainstorm.

But keep in mind that you will need to check the system's function periodically. Turn on your system if you suspect a head is broken or to check the function of each sprinkler head. Then, you will need to look for any areas where your lawn is turning brown, which can be a sign that not enough water is getting to that area.
